Bosses & Recommended Levels

Prominence II is built around boss fights, and most bosses have a recommended Player Level — walk in under-leveled and you get crushed. This note explains the level-gating and how to prepare. See Progression & Level Caps for how levels work and Creatures, Bosses & Mobs for the mob roster.

Player Level, not vanilla XP

Bosses scale to your Player Level (shown top-left of your inventory), which grows only from combat — not the green vanilla XP bar. Your max level is gated by story progress, so if you’re stuck, advance the Main Story chapter rather than grinding (full detail in Progression & Level Caps). Many boss quest descriptions list a recommended level — treat it as a real warning.

The boss-gating system

The pack wires many bosses into a shared level-definition system (boss_level_definitions.json5) — a structured difficulty curve rather than scattered one-off fights. The gates are soft (a strong recommendation, not a hard lock). Confirmed examples from Bosses of Mass Destruction (BOMD):

BossRecommended levelNotes
Night Lich~10650 HP, summons undead, drops a Soul Star after 50 summon-kills
Nether Gauntlet~15900 HP, self-heals, drops Ancient Debris
Obsidilith~40Tankiest — 2000 HP, 20 armor, heals; End-themed
Void Blossom(optional)1250 HP; sits outside the level-gate list

The same gated roster also includes vanilla’s Ender Dragon, AdventureZ’s Blackstone Golem and The Eye, Souls Weapons’ Accursed Lord/Draugr, Mine Cells’ Conjunctivius, Archon’s Null, Spellblade Next’s Magus, Eldritch End’s The Faceless (X’al), and the pack’s own Hastur Magus finale.

The pack’s boss mods

  • Bosses of Mass Destruction — four high-threat standalone bosses (above). Built to be fought with real gear, not stumbled into.
  • Marium’s Soulslike Weaponry — a soulslike arc with its own quest chapter and four named bosses: The Decaying King, Old Champion’s Remains, Fallen Icon → Harbinger of Moonlight, and Monarch of Chaos (pedestal-summoned via a “Shard of Uncertainty”). Beating them yields soul materials for its legendary weapon roster.
  • Archon — a rune/mana magic tree; bosses are summoned on a Pedestal using ingredients listed in your Grimoire (right-click the ingredients onto the pedestal — there’s no GUI; shift-click to clear). Its gated boss is Null.
  • Mutant Monsters — oversized, dangerous versions of familiar mobs; a step up from vanilla, good for leveling toward the real bosses.
  • The Graveyard — the Corrupted Champion, a multiphase fight (400 HP casting → 200 HP hunting phase, summons minions) summoned from staff fragments, plus themed hordes.
  • Eldritch End — X’al, The Faceless Eye, a summonable End-dimension horror with an area void attack.
  • Plus dimension/structure bosses: The Bumblezone’s Beehemoth / Queen Beehemoth (“Bee Queen” fight), Mine Cells’ Conjunctivius, and the Main Story’s Hastur Magus finale.

How to prepare for a boss

  1. Check the recommended level in the boss’s quest, and make sure your Player Level clears it (level up via combat — see Progression & Level Caps).
  2. Reforge your gear up a tier first — Limestone early, Pyrite mid, Galena for endgame Mythic gear (see Gear Rarity & Reforging).
  3. Eat a buff meal before the fight — cooked food gives real stat buffs here (see Farming & Food).
  4. Bring the summon ingredients if it’s a summoned boss (Archon Grimoire recipes, Marium’s pedestal Shard, Graveyard staff fragments).
  5. Set a waystone/waypoint nearby so a death doesn’t cost you the trek back (see Fast Travel & Waystones and Death, Graves & Recovery).
  6. Match your archetype gear and talents to the fight.

Anticipated questions

How do I know a boss’s recommended level? It’s written in the boss’s Quest Book entry. Check before engaging.

The gate is “soft” — can I fight above my level anyway? Technically yes, gates are recommendations not hard locks — but bosses scale and hit hard, so under-leveling is how you die fast. Bring the level.

Why am I stuck at a level and can’t get stronger? Your max level is capped by story progress, not grinding. Advance the Main Story / Hasturian Era chapter to raise the cap (see Progression & Level Caps).

How do I summon a boss? Depends on the mod: Archon uses a Pedestal + Grimoire ingredients (right-click, no GUI), Marium’s Monarch of Chaos uses a pedestal + Shard of Uncertainty, The Graveyard’s Corrupted Champion uses staff fragments. Others spawn in the world or their dimension.

Do I keep my stuff if a boss kills me? Yes — your items go into a recoverable grave (item loss is disabled on this server). See Death, Graves & Recovery. But recovering it from a boss arena can be dangerous, so prepare properly.
