Gear Rarity & Reforging
Rarity ladder
Weapons, tools, and armor have a quality, ascending:
Common → Uncommon → Rare → Epic → Legendary → Mythic
Higher rarity means better stats and bonus “affix” effects. This system is run by the Zenith Renewed mod (a Fabric port of Apotheosis) — see Core RPG & Combat Mods. A separate mod, Tierify, layers its own per-item tier scale on top, which is why two copies of the “same” sword can feel very different in your hands. When you craft or obtain gear it rolls a random rarity — reforging is how you improve it.
Reforging
Reforging changes an item’s quality and is a core progression loop, done in the Reforging tab of an Anvil, which has three slots:
- Left = Base Material — tied to the specific item. Example: a Holy Wand needs a Gold Ingot as its base. Hover the reforge button after placing your item to see exactly which base material it wants.
- Middle = the Item to reforge — only tools, weapons and armor are reforgeable (not other items).
- Right = Reforge Material — its tier sets the quality range you can roll.
The three reforge materials
| Reforge Material | Where / how to get it | Quality range |
|---|---|---|
| Limestone Chunk (T1) | Overworld — craft from 4× Limestone Block or 4× Diorite Block (yields 4) | Common → Uncommon (through Epic) |
| Pyrite Chunk (T2) | Nether — craft from 4× Pyrite Dust (mine Pyrite Ore) for 1, or smelt Ancient Debris for 4 | Uncommon → Legendary |
| Galena Chunk (T3) | End — craft from 2× Galena Dust (deep Overworld caves; End Stone also works) + 2× Popped Chorus Fruit | Legendary → Mythic |
(The in-game Reforging chapter lists each material’s guaranteed range; higher-tier chunks can roll the top rarities but not every roll lands there.)
Increasing your odds — use Luck
Reforging is a roll, and Luck improves your chances at higher qualities. It’s not pure grind: stack passive Luck before reforging your best gear. Sources include luck potions, luck-granting trinkets, and even wine — grab whatever Luck you can, then reforge.
Practical rule: reforge with Limestone early, Pyrite mid-game, and save Galena for pushing your best gear to Mythic. Reforging 100 items to Mythic is even an “Eternal Challenge” (Mythic Blacksmith).
Artifact reforging is separate
Artifact weapons (Frostmourne, Ekavar, etc.) don’t use these chunks — they’re forged and maintained at S’kellak’s Forge with Encased Remnants (repair/reforge) and a Hardening Catalyst to make them unbreakable. See Artifacts and the in-game Artifact Reforging chapter.
Armor sets & tiers
Progression is organized around tiered armor sets tuned to each archetype (Assassin, Souldancer, Ranger, Prior, Runic, Sapphire, Plaguebringer, etc.), obtained by crafting or killing bosses. Each “Tier II/III/IV Guide” quest tells you the next set and weapon for your build — follow it rather than guessing.
Common mistakes
- Missing the Base Material. The left slot is item-specific; if reforge won’t proceed, hover the button to read what base it needs.
- Trying to reforge non-gear. Only tools, weapons and armor qualify.
- Wasting Galena on early gear. Save the End-tier chunk for the gear you’ll actually keep.
- Reforging with no Luck. Pop luck potions/trinkets/wine first, especially for Pyrite→Legendary and Galena→Mythic attempts.
- Chasing rarity over affixes. A high rarity with the wrong stats for your build can be worse than a lower one with the right ones.
Anticipated questions
How do I improve a weapon’s rarity? Use the Reforging tab of an Anvil: base material (left), the item (middle), a reforge chunk (right).
Where’s the reforging menu? It’s the second/Reforging tab inside a normal Anvil.
Which chunk do I need for Mythic? Galena Chunk (End tier). Pyrite tops out at Legendary; Limestone is the early-game chunk.
What’s the left slot for? An item-specific base material (e.g. Gold Ingot for a Holy Wand). Hover the reforge button to see it.
Reforging keeps giving low rarity — am I unlucky? Partly — it’s a random roll. Stack Luck (potions, trinkets, wine) to bias toward higher qualities, and use a higher-tier chunk.
Can I reforge armor, or just weapons? Both — any tool, weapon or armor. Not other item types.
How do I make gear unbreakable? For artifacts, a Hardening Catalyst at S’kellak’s Forge; for charms/normal gear, Unbreaking+Mending or a Hardening Catalyst via enchanting.
Where do I get Pyrite/Galena Dust? Pyrite Ore is mined in the Nether; Galena Dust is found in deep Overworld caves (or substitute End Stone in the Galena Chunk recipe).
